WC 2015: Are more 100s meaning lesser performance?

By Shubham

Bengaluru, March 9: The 2015 ICC World Cup has seen 26 centuries scored so far and of them only two have been scored by players from India and New Zealand, the two teams who are yet to lose any match in the competition.

The most number of centuries have so far come from Sri Lanka (6), South Africa (5) and West Indies (3) and Australia (3), but these three teams have not been unbeatable. While the Lankans, South Africans and Australians have won three matches out of five, the West Indians have won only two of their five matches so far even though their dashing opener Chris Gayle scored a double hundred against Zimbabwe at Canberra in this World Cup.

So are hundreds not catering much to the teams' performance?

Hundreds do not always help teams in big events like World Cups where team efforts matter more. Both India and New Zealand have been doing magnificently in this World Cup because they are displaying superb team efforts and not banking on one or two individuals.

Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies banking too much on individuals?

Teams like South Africa, West Indies and Sri Lanka are depending too much on players like AB de Villiers, Gayle, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena and hence failing to overcome challenges periodically.

India too used to depend on Tendulkars and Gangulys too much in past WCs

India too had seen this in the past and used to depend more on the likes of Sachin Tendulkars, Sourav Gangulys and Rahul Dravids. It was one of those terrific tons from either of them that used to keep the Indian fans happy but the results were never consistent.

Three of Tendulkar's six WC hundreds had gone in vain

Tendulkar, for example, had scored six centuries in the World Cup but three of those (against Sri Lanka in 1996 and against England and South Africa in 2011) couldn't help India win because the team lacked the bowling strength to win.

In 2015 edition, India are a more balanced outfit

In the 2015 edition, two Indians have scored fine centuries in two crucial matches but it was because of the all-round performance that India could win the encounters comprehensively. The Black Caps on the other hand have scored no centuries but yet have won all the five matches they have played so far in this World Cup.
