Mirpur (Bangladesh), July 10: South Africa's debutant fast bowler Kagiso Rabada took a hat-trick and set records during the 1st One Day International against Bangladesh here at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Friday.
The 20-year-old right-arm fast bowler blew Bangladesh batting line-up away with the best ever ODI bowling figures for a debutant - 6/16 in 8 overs.
First, he announced his arrival by claiming a hat-trick in only his 2nd over of the rain-hit match reduced to 40 overs per side.
Rabada is only the 2nd debutant to take a hat-trick. The first being Bangladesh's Taijul Islam. Before today, Rabada had appeared in 4 Twenty20 Internationals, taking 3 wickets.
Rabada's maiden ODI wicket was Tamim Iqbal, bowled for a duck and in the next two balls he scalped Litton Das (caught by Farhaan Behardien) and Mahmuddullah (LBW). This was a triple-wicket maiden.
In his 4th over, he sent back Soumya Sarkar, caught by JP Duminy. His first spell read - 5-1-14-4. However, he was not done yet.
He returned to add two more wickets (captain Mashrafe Mortaza and Jubair Hossain) and finished with outstanding figures of 8-3-16-6 (only 8 overs maximum as match was reduced to 40 overs due to rain). This is the best bowling by a South African in ODIs (previous best 6/22 by Makhaya Ntini against Australia in 2006).
The previous best for a first-timer in ODIs was 6/22 in 7 overs for Fidel Edwards of West Indies against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2003.
