Most Oz cricket fans don't know why Symonds was punished

By Staff

Sydney, Nov.14 : A majority of cricket fans have welcomed the announcement of Andrew Symonds' recall to the Test team, but don't know why he was sacked by his teammates.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Symonds was sacked for many other reasons, and not just because he opted to go fishing when he was supposed to attend a team meeting in Darwin ahead of the series against Bangladesh.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland suggested as much when he spoke candidly at a Cricket Society of Australia lunch in Melbourne last week.

Sutherland said there were "a lot of other issues", but declined to elaborate.

And on Monday, when Sutherland and Symonds appeared together at the MCG to announce his exile was over, I asked the all-rounder if there was any other reason for his suspension. I missed the team meeting," he said brusquely.

He is no certainty to play, with selectors naming him in a 13-man squad along with Shane Watson, but his career is clearly back on track.

Speaking before Symonds was declared available for selection again, Sutherland said the indefinite suspension was handed down by Cricket Australia after a recommendation by senior players.

Symonds has also said that he has no intention of apologizing to his team mates for his Darwin faux pax.
