Punjab CM International Cup in December

Chandigarh, Jul 5 (UNI) The Punjab Sports Department will conduct the Chief Minister International Cup in December. The date and venue will be finalised after receiving communication from the concerned national sports federation.

According to Sports Director Olympian Pargat Singh, discussions were going on with the ad hoc hockey committee, All India Football Federation and Wrestling Federation of India for allotment of internaitonal event to Punjab. This year the CM International Cup will be hosted only in one discipline.

Punjab Sports Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike has sent the proposed sports calendar for 2008-2009 to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for his approval.

According to Pargat Singh, besides preparing and sending the state teams for the National Women Sports Festival in all groups (I, II and III), the Punjab Sports Department will also play organise the National Women Sports Festival in kho-kho, gymnastics, volleyball and kabaddi at Gurdaspur from November 12 to 15.

The Punjab Sports Department will also celebrate the National Sports Day at Jalandhar August 29. The Sports Day is celebrated on the occasion of birthday of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.

With a view to spot talent in rural area, the department has chalked out various rural competitions for boys and girls from block to state level tournaments. Similarly various tournaments for panchayats from block to state level have been proposed in the sports calendar for 2008-9.

The state government's ambitious plan to bring back hockey, the national game, at its pristine glory, will organize hockey league for boys and girls in various age groups from July. 2008 to January 2009. The week-end matches for boys in age groups of under-13, 14, 16 and 19 will be played at Jalandhar, Amritsar and Ludhiana. The hockey league for girls under-15 and above 15 years will be conducted at Ludhiana, Amritsar and Badal.

It has also been proposed to organise the All India Civil Services Lawn Tennis Tournament. Dates and venue will be decided later.
