July 18 is World Listening Day hosted by the World Listening Project.
It is an unofficial day of observance where people are encouraged to set aside time to record the stories of their families, friends, and local communities.
July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R Murray Schafer.
His World Soundscape Project developed the fundamental ideas and practices of acoustic ecology in the 1970s.
Since its inception in 2010, thousands of people from six continents have participated in World Listening Day.
The purpose of the celebration is to create awarness about the importance of listening.
On this day, people hold various events including listening parties and educational to understand the world's natural environment better.
However, people should not confuse this day with World Music Day, an annual music celebration that takes place on 21 June.
