Vagir, Indian Navy’s 5th Scorpene-class submarine

Madhuri Adnal
It has been built indigenously, under Indian Navy's Project-75, at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai.
It got its name from INS Vagir - a Vela-class submarine from Russia that served in the Navy from 1973 to 2001.
Vagir will boost the Indian Navy’s capability to further India’s maritime interests and is capable of undertaking diverse missions including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and surveillance missions.
The submarine, also called 'Sand Shark', was delivered to the Indian Navy on December 20 last year.
The Sand Shark represents ‘Stealth and Fearlessness’, two qualities that are synonymous with the ethos of a submariner.
Six Kalvari-class submarines, designed by French company DCNS, are being built in India as part of the Indian Navy's Project-75.
