Unsung Freedom fighters from Northeast India

The contributions of personalities from the Northeast are often left out when we speak about Independence Day. Let us have a look at Unsung Freedom fighters
Born in Barangabari, Assam in 1924, Kanaklata Barua made a name for herself during the Quit India Movement, when she joined the Mrityu Bahini, a suicide squad, when she was only 17. She was martyred in young age with a Tricolour furling in her hands.

Paona Brajabashi
One of the most revered figures of the Anglo-Manipur War in 1891 was Major Paona Brajabashi who is being honored by the Manipuris as the epitome of patriotism and bravery. Till his last breath, he refused to surrender and bravely chose death over serving the British.
Also known as Togan Sangma or Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, he was a 19th century Garo (A-chik) warrior and leader from Garo hills, Meghalaya, who died battling British forces on 12 December, 1872
Kiang Nongbah or U Kiang Nangbah was a Pnar (a matrilineal sub-tribal group of the Khasi people) freedom fighter who was publicly hanged by the Britishers in Jowai town on 30 December 1862
