International Day of Girl Child: Facts we must know

krishna murthy
The theme of this year is: “Our time is now-our rights.” Past year themes have been 'My voice, our equal future', 'Ending child marriage' and so on.
The annual day recognizes girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
First celebrated in 2012, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl.
The day was established by United Nations General Assembly to bring forth the issues faced by girls such as education, child marriage, access to services related to puberty, sexual health and so on.
Despite being in 2022, girls are deprived of their basic rights in several parts of the world.
The aim of the day is to address the challenges girls face and also to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
This year to celebrate this annual day the World Health Organization has co-organised a virtual intelligence dialogue between girl advocates and high-level leaders.
The dialogue will put the girls and their rights at the centre of decision-making.
