As the countdown has started for its release, let's take a look at some facts about the project.
Everybody knows that the film is based on Kalki's novel by the same name, but did you know he took three and half years to finish the work?
Legendary MGR, Kamal Haasan and Bharathi all wanted to bring the story on big screen, but could not for one or the other reason.
Interestingly, MGR, in late 1950s, had bought the rights of the book by paying Rs 10,000.
For decades Mani Ratnam nurtured the dream of making film on 'Ponniyin Selvan’.
Many might not be aware of the fact that Ratnam planned this project in 2010 with the stars like Mahesh Babu and Vijay.
However, it was dropped after the producers backed out as they were not confident of recovering the investment.
Rajinikanth was interested to act in the film and had confessed this to Mani, but he politely told him that his fans would not like to see him in such a character.
