India’s worst heatwave years and death toll

India has yet again been hit by a heatwave and is causing health complications
The heatwave has hit India hard this year. Between 1971 and 2019 the extreme weather event (EWE) has killed 1,41,308 people of which 17,362 were due to heatwaves
Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha have reported the most heatwave deaths. Data firm Statista the worst heatwaves in the last decade were in 2013 and 2015
The worst years in last 10 years were in 2012 (729 deaths), 2014 (547 deaths), 2016 (510 deaths) and 2019 (498 deaths)
Statista says that highest number of heatwave days were reported in 2010 (254 days), 2012 (189 days) and 2019 (157 days)
Partly due to the COVID-19 lockdown heatwave deaths decreased in 2020 and 2021 statistics have shown
In 2013 the number of heatwave deaths stood at 1,433 while in the year 2015 it was a staggering 2,081
The main reason for increase in heatwaves is global warming associated with greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, etc. in the atmosphere.
