The first case of BA.4 subvariant of Omicron has been detected in India in Hyderabad
This sub-variant, along with BA.5 subvariant of Omicron, has been causing a major wave of fresh coronavirus infections
The BA.4 variant was first detected from a specimen collected on 10 January 2022 in Limpopo, South Africa
They have been circulating since January, 2022
They appear to be growing in prevalence
They carry additional mutations of concern
There is no evidence to suggest these mutations are associated with more severe disease
They can dodge antibodies from earlier Omicron infection... to some extent
