COPD diet: Foods to eat and avoid

Gowrish Babu
A healthy diet won’t cure COPD but it can help your body fight off infections and make you feel better.
You should include foods that contain complex carbohydrates like fresh fruit and starchy vegetables, whole grains, whole grain bread and pasta, beans and lentils in your diet.
Potassium-rich products like avocado, dark leafy greens, tomatoes, asparagus, beets, potatoes, bananas and oranges can be added too.
People with COPD should try to drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
Avoid dairy products like milk and milk-derived products, including butter, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt.
Keep a tab on salt intake as it can be hard on your lungs because it causes you to retain fluids, which may increase blood pressure and lead to shortness of breath.
Avoid foods with high caffeine content such as chocolate, coffee, tea and sodas.
Try to avoid high-calorie foods, such as meats, baked goods, sodas and fried and fatty foods.
If you have COPD, avoid or severely limit your alcohol intake.
