All About India's Old Parliament Building

As PM Modi is set to inaugurate the new Parliament building on May 28, let's take a look at some facts about the old building.

The foundation stone for the Parliament House was laid in February 1921.

On January 18, 1927, Viceroy of India Lord Irwin inaugurated Parliament House.

The building was originally called the Council House.

Constructed in six years, it housed the Imperial Legislative Council before independence.

The cost of construction of the old Parliament building was Rs 83 lakh in 1927.

Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker designed the Parliament House.

The existing Parliament can only house 552 persons in LS and 284 in RS.
