West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has rejected the Centre's notification banning the sale of animals for slaughter at livestock markets and animal fairs. She said, West Bengal will not implement the new rules. Describing the move as "undemocratic, unconstitutional and unethical", Mamata said the state will seek a review by the Supreme Court, if needed. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also opposed the ban and appealed to his counterparts in all other states to object to the “covert attempt to usurp the powers of the state legislature in the guise of rules under a Central Act. Protests erupted across Tamil Nadu, with several parties, including the opposition DMK, slamming the "silent" state government for not opposing the Centre on the issue.
