UP ration cards carry names from Bollywood songs and vegetables
In an unbelievable a scam, a public distribution system (PDS) dealer in Agra district had been allegedly distributing subsidized foodgrain to an estimated 3,500 non-existent beneficiaries with names drawn from classic Bollywood songs, fruits and vegetables and items of everyday use. Padam Singh, the accused PDS shop owner, had created ration cards for at least 350 ghost families in Nibohra village of Fatehabad tehsil. Some of the names are from the Bollywood song. Singh was caught red-handed by an inspection team. Fatehabad sub-divisional magistrate Vandita Srivastav said, "We had been receiving complaints against Singh for several months, but couldn't take action because of the hectic workload around election time. But now we have terminated his licence after he failed to explain the anomalies in the ration cards. We will take more stringent action once our investigation establishes how much money he made from the scam. We have also suspended the police inspector who ignored the previous complaints against Singh. Earlier Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi ordered strict action against the food grain and ration mafia, while directing the officials to submit reports of closed sugar mills in the state.
