Alastair Cook was drained as captain, says Andrew Strauss
Alastair Cook was drained by the demands of being England Test captain, says England director of cricket Andrew Strauss. Andrew Strauss said that Cook felt that new blood was needed in the captain role now. He said, we know it has been a tough winter. It was an obvious time for him to step back and consider and have thoughts about what was right for the team moving forwards. Cook at 32, quit as England skipper after four-and-a-half years of captaincy. England lost a test series 4-0 in India at the end of last year, prompting Cook to stand down.Joe Root is strong favourite to replace Cook at the helm but Strauss said he was not ruling anyone out of the running ahead of home series against South Africa and West Indies before the next Ashes contest in Australia.
