JKLF supporters protest in Srinagar over rehabilitation of Kashmiri pandits

Srinagar, April 10: Violent protests erupted in Srinagar on Friday afternoon after JKLF workers took to the streets protesting the rehabilitation plan of Kashmiri Pandits.

Police officials had to lob tear gas shells and even resorted to lathi charge to disperse the protestors.

Meanwhile, JKLF leader Yasin Malik was taken into preventive custody after the protests turned violent.

The protests began after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh met Jammu and Kashmir CM Mufti Mohammed Sayeed earlier his week. Singh said that Sayeed had agreed to provide land in the state for composite townships for Kashmiri Pandits.

However Sayeed later told the home minister the community cannot live separately and their demand for a ‘homeland' was also not possible. "I have told the Union Home Minister that Kashmiri Pandits cannot live separately (in Kashmir Valley) and they will have to live together."

Meanwhile, separatists and JKLF leader Yasin Malik opposed the move and said that they would protest on Friday and would call for a complete shutdown on Saturday.
