Bengaluru, April 16: Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) explosive opener Chris Gayle is set to create Twenty20 history tonight (April 16) at M Chinnaswamy Stadium.
On Sunday, at 8 PM IST, RCB face Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 match with Gayle on the brink of a major landmark. (RCB-RPS match preview)
The 37-year-old left-hander is struggling with the bat in the ongoing IPL but he is just 3 runs away from becoming the first player in T20 history to aggregate 10,000 runs.
In RCB's previous home game on April 14, expectations were high from Gayle but he fell short of the milestone by 3 runs. He had entered that contest against Mumbai Indians (MI) needing 25 runs to complete 10,000.
The 10,000-run mark has been breached by several batsmen in first-class and List A (50 overs) formats but never in the shortest form of the game.
Gayle, a veteran of 289 T20s, has so far accumulated 9,997 runs at an average of over 40. He has 18 hundreds with a highest of 175 not out, an IPL record. Gayle made his T20 debut in September 2005.
The Jamaican has already scored over 10,000 runs in both first-class and List A.
With just 6 and 22 from his two matches so far in IPL this season, Gayle will be hoping to make it a memorable outing tonight for himself and his legion of fans.
