Rahul will now be required to prove his fitness and earn a spot in the side for the second Test, starting on August 3 at Colombo.

Shikhar Dhawan and Abhinav Mukund opened the innings for India in the first Test in the absence of regular openers Rahul and Murali Vijay.

Making most of the opportunity he got, Dhawan slammed a blistering 190 off 168 balls to help India post a mammoth 600 against hosts.

While Mukund, who was part of the team in the series against Australia, once again failed to encash the opportunity. The left-handed batsman from Tamil Nadu was dismissed for 12 on a pitch that was conducive of batting.

With yet another missed opportunity, Mukund would find it tough to make it to the playing XI in the second Test as Rahul is fit for the job.

Earlier before the start of the tour, the 25-year-old cricketer took to Twitter to share a video of his training in the nets and hitting the ball to regain his fitness.

"Getting fitter by the minute. Can't wait to get back out there for India! - Jai Hind," tweeted Rahul.

The Karnataka batsman injured his left shoulder during the India-Australia Test series, while batting in the opening game in February in Pune.

The shoulder injury, aggravated in a Test match later in the series, forcing him to miss the IPL as well as the Champions Trophy 2017 in England.
