Big blow for Dipa Karmakar as Produnova vault loses point

By Sujata Sarkar

Bengaluru, Sep 19: At a time when Dipa Karmakar has just started warming up with her famous Produnova vault again after couple of weeks' lay-off from Rio Olympics, the only female Indian gymnast to have participated in the Olympics and earned 4th place, has received a major blow. The vault which carries maximum points among all the vaults, has lost points from 7 to 6.4, set by the International Gymnastics Federation (IGF) judges.

Bisweswar Nandi, Dipa's coach, when asked whether it is anxious news for his student, said, "I had already started thinking of introducing a new vault for Dipa. But that is also revolved with Produnova. Now with Produnova vault losing points I have to rethink after discussing with a few experienced coaches and then decide what can be our step. The percentage of reduction in Produnova vault has been huge. Now, it will be too tough for Dipa to earn 15 points from vault." (Who is Dipa?)

Minara Begum, one of country's most experienced coaches, who was also with the Indian female gymnasts including Dipa in 2014 Incheon Asian Games, feels Dipa must have to think of introducing a new vault. But she felt that is not to be going easy and has to learn and master the skill of that vault.

Minara Begum said, "But at the same time Dipa should not leave Produnova as she has already mastered the skill of that vault. Rather her coach should think of starting a new one where Dipa can get the taste of Produnova vault. Then it will become easy for Dipa to master its skill rapidly."

Bisweswar Nandy is also thinking on same lines.
