Raipur, Nov 21: A week after the botched sterilisations were reported from Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, on Friday, Nov 21, it was reported that fungus-laden anaesthesia was used on victims at the Gaurella health camps.

According to a report published in TOI, the fungus-ridden Lignocaine injections, used for anaesthesia, were supplied by Indore-based company Kabra Drugs. [Chhattisgarh sterilisation tragedy: All you need to know]

Health commissioner Pratap Singh said that the company had been blacklisted for 5 years.

Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation (CGMSC) had been procuring and supplying injections from the company since September 2013.

On November 8, about 83 women had undergone surgeries at a sterilisation camp held at Nemichand Jain Cancer and Research Centre at Pendari village in Takhatpur.

Later, almost all of them, aged below 32, were hospitalised after they developed post-operative complications.

While, 11 of them died in the past two days, 69 have taken ill and some are in critical condition.

The surgeon who performed tubectomy procedures on 83 women at a camp at Pendari village was arrested and the state's Food and Drug Administration authorities sealed a manufacturing unit which allegedly supplied sub-standard medicines administered to the victims.

The United Nations had also expressed sadness over the "tragic" deaths of women in a mass sterilisation camp, calling for reform of laws to prevent recurrences and demanding accountability for those responsible to avoid impunity for people who provide low standard services.
