Rangarajan defends report on poverty
New Delhi, July 7: After facing criticism about his report on the revised poverty figures in the country, C Rangarajan has defended his committee's report.

Rangarajan said that that results brought forth by the panel were based on the estimates given by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).

He said that he poverty ration in the country was still very high. The Rangarajan panel reports shows that three out of 10 people in India are poor and that the poverty limit had increased to Rs 47 per day in cities.

According to the report those who spent less than Rs 47 were considered poor (read more).

The report has drawn a lot of criticism with the opposition terming it as a cruel joke. BSP chief Mayawati said: "This is nothing but making a joke of poor people. Whatever figures that have been given and the way it has been calculated, our party does not support it."
