New Delhi, June 1: Delhi Police's Facebook page, that seeks to reach out to people from the northeastern states in the capital, particularly the young, has logged 5,500 complaints and suggestions from across India in the three weeks since its launch.

The page, Delhi Police for North East Folks - -- www.dpfne.com (delhipolicefornortheast.com) - was launched May 9 this year. It has become a popular tool made available by Delhi Police for the northeast people to help them in need.

"The northeastern people from all over India have sent over 5,500 suggestions and complaints since the Facebook page was launched," Joint Commissioner, Robin Hibu told IANS. Hibu, the face of the northeastern community in Delhi, is in charge of the page. He said the Facebook site is a simple way for northeast people to share their problems.

In a post on May 30, Delhi Police for North East Folks asked people from the northeast to get proper driving licences so as not to get cheated. They asked the post to be circulated widely.

On May 27, youth from the northeast urged police to act after a woman from Nagaland was assaulted by a lawyer outside the Tis Hazari court.

"If you delay JUSTICE you are denying the TRUTH," said a post. The Delhi police replied : "FIR registered, we will take action as per law....DCP and Joint CP monitoring the case."

Hibu said the site is monitored by him and is also under the "close observation" of senior Delhi Police officials.

"After getting any complaint on the Facebook page, we take proper action and inform the nearby police station to solve the matter as soon as possible. I also seek a clarification in the matter from the concerned police station chief," said Hibu.

In the first fortnight since launch of the Facebook page, the Delhi Police registered around 250 cases and arrested around 150 people for harassing northeastern men and women.

"All the arrested people were booked in rape, molestation, eve-teasing and other cases," said Hibu.

While replying to the suggestions made by northeastern people, Hibu said he discusses the points raised with other senior officers.

"Proper action is being taken on the suggestions being received on the Facebook page," he added.

Besides the Facebook site, a Northeast helpline - 1093 - and an interactive social media 'Whatsapp' on mobile number 9810083486 (the official number of Joint Commissioner of Police Training Robin Hibu) has also been launched by Delhi Police to help the northeast people residing in Delhi.

The Delhi Police took the step to launch the social media page and other tools in the wake of rising crimes against the northeast people in the capital.

There were widespread protests in Delhi and northeastern states after a 19-year-old Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania died Jan 30 after being beaten mercilessly by some shopkeepers in Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi.

The Delhi Police also announce their initiatives for the northeast people on the Facebook page.
