New Delhi, Jan 14: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) was in news in 2014 for its launch of the ambitious housing scheme, that offered over 25,000 flats.

According to news reports, the joy of owning a flat in Delhi was short-lived for some of the winners of the DDA Housing Scheme 2014.

The latest media reports claim that at least 1,500 allottees have returned their DDA flats, won by them in the draw.

An HT report report said that most of the flats that have surrendered back are located in Rohini Sector 34, Dwarka Sector 23-B and Narela.

A DDA official said that the reason behind returning of flats is that the applicants did not like the location of the flats.

He also clarified that they had advised applicants to first see the samples of the flats and go to the sites before filling the forms.

The applicants who have returned their flats say that the size of the 1room flats is too small, upto 40 and 50 square metres.

Some of them also complained about the lack of basic facilities like water, electricity, sewage system, bad condition of roads and no transport connectivity.

Another point that is worrying the allottes is the condition of '5-year lock0in period' during which they cannot sell the flat to anyone.

Now, the flats that have been surrendered will be offered to those who are on waiting list.

In December 2016, DDA is expected to laucnh another mega housing scheme in which at least 40,000 flats will be offered. [Don't lose hope! Yet another chance to avail your dream home in national capital]

The 'DDA Housing Scheme 2014', launched on September 1 saw such an overwhelming response that the urban body's website crashed within few hours of its launch and totalled about 18 lakh hits in the first few days, prompting authorities to ramp up the system to "handle the exponential rise in online traffic".

The new scheme, offered 25,034 flats - EWS, LIG, MIG, HIG, Janta flats and one-room apartments, ranging in prices from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 1. 2 crore, and closed on October 15. Among them, the 22,627 one-bed room apartments were a major draw for the people.

The draw was held on November 25 under the supervision of retired Delhi High Court judge Manju Goel, National Informatics Centre DG Mahesh Chandra, and IIT-Delhi professor Anshul Kumar.
