New Delhi, May 19: CPI(M) MP Brinda Karat on Thursday (May 19) lashed out at the party's Bengal leaders who sought an electoral understanding with the Congress in this Assembly election.

Karat, who congratulated the Kerala leadership of the party over defeating the same Congress they befriended in Bengal, said it is now time to assess the decision. The Kerala lobby of the CPI(M) was opposed to the idea of allying with the Congress but the Bengal leaders remained adamant.

The idea did not pay off as the Left-Congress alliance was humbled by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee's party bagged 211 seats in the 294-member Assembly while the Left-Congress could gather only 76. The BJP won three seats---in northern, central and southern parts of the state.

Even after veteran CPI(M) leader from Bengal Biman Bose said during declaring the Left's candidates' name that the Congress and Left could never be allies and they would not stage, the state CPI(M) leadership, backed by former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, made a revision in the stand and batted for the alliance.

But the results showed that the Left gained little. In fact, the joint vote share of the Left and Congress got reduced by two per cents, compared to the added figures in the 2014 Lok Sabha election. Party-wise, the Congress increased its vote-share by two per cent in this election compared to the general polls, but the Left has lost another four per cent.

Karat, a Politburo member, said it was because of this alliance that the Left had to face this debacle.

Besides Karat, a CPI(M) candidate in Bengal also said it was wrong to tie up with the Congress.
