In public function held in Karwar, his parliamentary constituency, Ananth Kumar held Congress party responsible for 'sitting on plastic chairs'.

Hegde said, "We are sitting on plastic chairs, isn't it? (asking the audience). This is due to Congress rule, had we ruled for 70 years, you would have been sitting on silver chairs."

He urged the people to elect a 'tiger' in 2019 general elections. He likened the opposition leaders to crows, monkeys, foxes.

"On one side crows, monkeys, foxes and others have come together, On the other side we have a tiger. In 2019, choose to elect the tiger", Hegde said.

Last year, Hegde was in the centre of controversy after he said that his party, the ruling BJP, will "soon change the Constitution," which mentions the word "secular." He was attacking what he called a "new fad where people project themselves as secular."

The 49-year-old minister was speaking at a function in Kukanur of Koppal district in the state when he urged people to "claim with pride that they are Muslim, Christian, Lingayat, Brahmin, or a Hindu," adding, "Those who, without knowing about their parental blood, call themselves secular, they don't have their own identity...They don't know about their parentage, but they are intellectuals."
