Lucknow, Oct 21: Encouraged by the intense search of 1,000 tonnes of gold in Duaundiya Kheda in Uttar Pradesh by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), another frenzied treasure hunt has taken off in the neighbouring Fatehpur district, where private persons have dug up nearly 300 square metres near a Shiva temple, causing damage to the idols and lingams.

The hunt started after a disciple of sadhu Sobhan Sarkar claimed that 2,500 tonnes of gold are hidden underground.

The state government has deployed PAC personnel to guard the site. A large number of vandals and sorcerers have dug up more than nine places to bring out the gold. They also badly beat up two of the temple priests while seeking clues about the hidden treasure.

The disciple of Sobhan Sarkar recently asked the district administration to begin the excavation for 2,500 tonnes of gold in Adampur. He said the gold was located very near the surface and could be found with naked eyes.

The 'treasure' belongs to an ex-ruler of Rewa, who reportedly moved the gold to the fort built near the ancient Shiva temple.
