Bareilly: Triple talaq victim confined in room dies during medical treatment
Bareilly, July 11: A Muslim woman, Razia, who was allegedly thrashed and confined in a room without food for a month by her husband, died during treatment on Tuesday.
According to Razia's sister, the victim, who has a six-year-old child, got divorced from her husband over the phone. Subsequently, she was locked inside the room without any food or water and was thrashed by her husband for dowry.
Raziya had approached to many, pleading for justice but was ignored. It was Farhat Naqvi, sister of Mukhtar Naqvi and founder of NGO - Mera Haq, who came in forefront to assist the victimised Raziya and get her medical aid.
The Supreme Court had on August 22 last year struck down triple talaq, calling the practice unconstitutional and in violation of Article 14 of the Constitution, which provides for equality before the law.
The "triple talaq" bill has not been cleared by the Rajya Sabha yet.
