National and international reactions poured in after the nun was raped by one of the members of a gang that had broken into the convent school in Ranaghat, about 100 kilometres from here. The men had damaged a bust of Jesus Christ, locked up in a room and then dragged the 72-year-old nun to another room where she was raped. The culprits then fled with cash worth Rs 2 lakh and some valuables.

Representatives of the Vatican & Italian govt visited the state after the horror

Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India said the nun had forgiven the oppressors but added that the culprits must be brought to justice.

The West Bengal Police failed to arrest a single man even after a week passed since the horrific incident even if Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is also the state's police minister, promised to nab the criminals within 48 hours.

On Wednesday, she decided to hand over the matter to the CBI or the Central Investigative Agency which she and her party, the Trinamool Congress, had been slamming over the Saradha chit fund scam till recently.
