Kolkata, Jun 5: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday spent her day in Jaldapara forest of north Bengal and planted saplings to mark World Environment Day.

"Incidentally, today I am in the midst of lush green forest cover at Jaldapara National Park in north Bengal. The greenery, captivating flora and fauna, beautiful elephants, rhinos, the fast flowing streams and above all, the warmth of the people around, have left me spell-bound," Banerjee said in a post on Facebook.

She also joined a tree plantation programme at Hollong in the forest and posted its pictures on the social networking website.

"Environment is the most important resource for life. We draw more, than give back to nature and environment," she said.

"To save our very existence, we need to save earth, trees, water, sea, river, all water bodies and keep the air clean to prevent global warming. This is necessary for a sustainable environment," Banerjee said while urging people to strive towards this goal for better tomorrow.

The theme for this year's environment day is Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with the slogan "Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level".
