Kolkata, July 11: The impasse at Jadavpur University ended late on Tuesday evening after the varsity decided to revoke its earlier decision of doing away with admission tests in six humanities streams.

The decision to restore the admission tests were taken after an emergency meeting of the institution's executive council on Tuesday.

The council decided that the university would follow the earlier system of giving 50-50 weight to marks scored in Class 12 and the entrance exam for admission.

JU ranks fifth among the nation's top 10 universities according to a 2017 survey by the Union HRD ministry.

Two of the 20 members of a students' union of Jadavpur University who are on a hunger strike, over the past five days, in protest against the new admission procedure, were hospitalised on Tuesday.

According to a 2017 survey by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, JU ranks fifth among the nation's top 10 universities.

The students are, however, not willing to call off the protest as the modalities of the decision are yet to be finalised. The hunger strike has been lifted but the movement will go on. The protest went on as the executive council did not decide whether the examinations will be conducted by JU teachers or an external body. The students are still waiting for an official word from the university.

The first official announcement on restoration of the old admission system was made on Tuesday evening after two marathon meetings of the JU executive council.
