Wuhan gets wings: First three-way meeting between Afghanistan, India, China held in Kabul

Kabul, March 7: It was during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's informal meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan in April last year that the two sides had agreed to take a new cooperative approach on Afghanistan and steps have taken shape towards that direction in the past few months.

In October last year, 10 Afghan diplomats were jointly trained by the two neighbours at the Indian Foreign Service Institute in New Delhi. Trilateral cooperation between India, China and Afghanistan was among the main thrusts agreed in Wuhan and on March 2, more steps were seen towards that direction.

The first three-way meeting of Afghanistan, India and China was held Kabul where the Indian and Chinese ambassadors to Afghanistan were present and it was chaired by Idrees Zaman, the host country's deputy minister for foreign affairs, The Kabul Times reported.

Afghanistan stresses more cooperation with India, China

In the meeting, Zaman called India and China as Afghanistan's good neighbours and old friends and stressed on further training of Afghan military and civil employees, mining activities, increase of power and energy, improvement of agriculture and transport, setting up joint chamber of commerce between the three nations, among others. Zaman also called for cooperation in areas of mutual economic interest.

Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan Vinay Kumar and Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan Liu Jinsong praised the Afghan ministry of foreign affairs for holding the meeting and vowed that their respective countries were ready to extend necessary cooperation in the respective fields.
