Teaching civic sense! Woman throws cigarette butt out of car, man puts it back in

Perth, Feb 8: Sometimes, people need to be reminded about their civic sense and a man in Perth did just that to turn into a hero overnight.

Teaching civic sense! Woman throws cigarette butt out of car, man puts it back in

The incident happened in Churchlands, a suburb of Perth, where the hero of the story confronted a woman driver to teach her a lesson about her civic sense.

It so happened that the woman driver, while waiting at the traffic lights at Churchlands, threw out a cigarette butt out of her car window.

It was then that the man, named Magnus Hand, walked up to the side of the white hatchback and picked up the butt from the road and threw it back into the car. The man was driving another vehicle that stood in the traffic queue.

The incident was captured by a dashboard camera and Hand shared it on Facebook which went viral in quick time.

"So I was at the lights and this poor lady's cigarette accidentally fell out of her hand onto the road. Being the gentleman I am, I got out picked up the cig and kindly returned it to her," Magnus wrote in his Facebook post.

Here is the video shared by another user:

Hand was hailed by many social users as a hero after the incident with some even saying that he was their 'Australian of the Year', an award which incidentally went to a horse this year.

Under the Litter Act of 1979, littering in Australia can invite a fine of $500.

"The registered owner of the vehicle is considered to have committed the offence unless they can give the name of any person authorised by the registered owner to use the vehicle at that time," a spokesperson of Keep Australia Beautiful WA was quoted as saying by PerthNow in Western Australia.
