Moscow, Jan 13: Russian president Vladimir Putin has come out and denied charges of him using his pet dog to scare German Chancellor Angela Merkel in one of their earliest meetings.

The incident took place in Sochi in 2007 when Merkel met Putin for the first time at his home. According to reports, Putin then brought his pet dog Connie into the meeting even though he was briefed about Merkel's fear of dogs.

Now Putin has come out and dismissed all claims and said that he 'did not mean to scare Merkel.'
"I showed her my dog because I thought she would like it. I told her so later and apologised," he said.

The incident gained a lot of attention with many Germans claiming that Putin wanted to gain an advantage over Merkel in their first meeting itself.

However Putin said that he has immense respect for Merkel and says that she is a 'sincere person.'
