Sanders got over 74 per cent votes while Hillary got 25 per cent. Though the result in Utah will not affect the overall contest which Sanders is trailing by a distance, it will boost Sanders's campaign for the rest of the primary season after he faced a number of losses to the former US secretary of state.

Utah, with a large white population and a caucus process that tends to help candidates who have a big support, was predicted to go Sanders's way. On the other hand, for Clinton, this has been an unlucky state in the 2008 presidential elections as well when she had ceded it to her the then rival Barack Obama.

Utah was seen as favorable territory for Sanders, with an overwhelmingly white population and a caucus process that tends to reward candidates who have the most fervent supporters.

The state has 33 delegates up for the grabs.
