Rubio, the senator from Florida, beat Ohio Governor John Kasich in the Saturday primary which saw a large turnout.
In what was described to be one of the most significant GOP primaries, Rubio got 37.3 per cent of the 2,389 votes cast. Kasich came second with 35.5 per cent, suggesting that both could get the same number of delegates. Sources in the Republican Party said the allocation of the 19 delegates at stake would be in proportion to the votes garnered.
Front-runner Donald Trump, however, couldn't produce his magic in this primary and could muster just 13.8 per cent of votes. Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who is placed second in the overall contest at the moment, got 12.4 per cent.
Others received less than one per cent each.
