US Labour dept debars 15 companies from applying for H-1B visas

The new policy is said to be in line with the Trump administration's goal to protect American workers from discrimination and replacement by foreign labour.

The US Labour Department has debarred 15 companies from applying for H1-B visas. The Wage and Hour Division has released the list of companies, saying the list is effective as of February 1, 2018. The list comes a month after President Donald Trump pushed for merit-based immigration system, saying we should only allow people, having "great track record", to enter the US.

The new policy is said to be in line with the Trump administration's goal to protect American workers from discrimination and replacement by foreign labour.

According to the most recent report from the DOL, the top three occupations for which H-1B visas are certified, Computer Systems Analyst, Software Developer and Computer Programmer, account for 50 per cent of all occupations. For fiscal years 2012 to 2015, almost half of all applications certified were from companies in five states namely California, Texas, New York, New Jersey and Illinois.
