An explosive-laden vehicle blew up in front of the mosque. A second car exploded 30 minutes later in the same area leading to more casualties.

The victims included both military personnel and civilians, reports stated.

There have been a number of bombings since 2014 during the conflict between forces loyal to Khalifa Haftar, Islamists and other opponents. Several bombings had taken place in a bid to target figures linked to the Libyan National Army.

The conflict increased after former ruler Muammar Gaddafi was removed from power and killed in a NATO strike in 2011.
