Trump scores same-side goal while cracking joke on Cristiano Ronaldo with Portugal president

Washington, June 29: US President Donald Trump found the road bumpy twice during his meeting with his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa who visited him at the White House on Wednesday, June 27.

The first time it happened when Trump welcomed his European guest at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as the latter got off from his car. Trump is known for his brutal handshakes with foreign leaders but this time Sousa gave him back the taste of his own medicine by jerking the US president's hand and pulling him towards him.

The second instance came later when Trump tried to crack a joke on Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal's star footballer who is having a decent time in the ongoing World Cup in Russia. During a casual conversation about the World Cup, Sousa told Trump that if the latter visited Russia while the tournament was still on, he shouldn't forget to mention that Portugal is still there in the tournament and hoping to win the title, too. He also told Trump that Portugal has the best footballer in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo, at which the latter asked him whether the star footballer would run against Sousa for the Portuguese presidency. When Trump also tried to assure Sousa that he wouldn't, the latter reportedly told him that Portugal is not like the US; it's a bit different.

Portugal will take on Uruguay in the second of the Round of 16 games in the World Cup on June 30.

Sousa met Trump for the first time for a bilateral meeting in this visit and discussed with him issues related to energy and security. The meeting also came ahead of the July 11-12 summit of the Nato, of which Portugal is a member, in Brussels.
