By Shubham

It was an eventful Tuesday in world politics as US President Donald Trump met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un at the Capello Hotel in Sentosa Island, Singapore, for a historic summit.

Here are the highlights of what happened in Sentosa during the day:

  • Trump met Kim at 9.03 am Singapore time (6:33 am IST) and shook their hands for around 12 seconds, marking a new height in the relations between the two countries that have been historically foes.
  • The two leaders then spoke to each other in a one-on-one meeting for 38 minutes, accompanied by interpreters. Kim said on the occasion that the occasion was like a scene from a science-fiction film, to which Trump smiled.
  • The leaders had an extended bilateral meeting accompanied by their respective aides and Kim said the summit was a prelude to a peace to which Trump agreed. Kim also said the world will see a major change.
  • The leaders had a working lunch and took a stroll in the hotel campus after the food. It was going great, Trump told the media.
  • Trump and Kim then signed a "comprehensive" document over denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and the US extending security guarantees to North Korea although many analysts felt suspicious about the document and felt it was too thin.
  • The two sides also agreed to recover the remains of prisoners of war from their conflict and the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
  • Trump, who called Kim a "very talented man" said the talks went better than anyone could imagine, was set to appear at a press conference before leaving Singapore on Tuesday evening.
  • China, another important player in the Far East, welcomed the summit as historic.
