US police find body 'most likely' of 3-year-old missing Indian girl

According to Dallas News, police have not yet confirmed the identity of the dead body. The Medical Examiner will identify the body and the cause of death.

"The indications are that it is most likely her, however we have not had positive ID, so until we have positive identification we are not going to say it is Sherin" stated Sergeant Kevin Perlich.

The body was discovered by search dogs in a culvert near East Spring Valley and South Bowser Roads, east of US Highway 75. The location is less than a mile away from the missing girl's home.

Incidentally Wesley Mathews, the adoptive father of the missing girl had told the police that he had left the girl in an alley near the house located in the 900 block of Sunningdale at around 3am on that day as a punishment for not drinking her milk.

The 37 year old claimed that he had returned after 15 minutes to check out on her to find her missing. Coyotes are known to frequent this area.

Wesley had then gone indoors waiting for her to return on her own or had decided to launch a search later during the morning.

He further claimed that his wife, the girl's mother Sini Mathew's was unaware of the incident as she was sleeping.

Wesley Mathews was arrested for endangering the life of a child. He was later released from jail after furnishing a bond and surrendering his passport. He is also required to wear an electronic tracking device.

On 9th October Child Protective Services also took custody of Sherin's 4 year old sister and placed her in foster care. Sherin's mother is engaged in a legal battle to regain custody of the 4 year old.

Reports state that the Mathew's couple, originally from Kerala, had adopted this special needs child Sherin from an NGO in Nalanada, Bihar.

The FBI have seized near 50 items from the Mathews' residence including trash bags, cell phones, laptops, washer dryer digital camera.

The Indian Government has been closely following the case. Sushma Swaraj, External Affairs Minister had recently tweeted "We are deeply concerned about the missing child. Indian Embassy in U.S. is actively involved and they keep me informed."

"We are closely monitoring Sherin Mathews case. We have established the contact with the community and authorities," tweeted Anupam Ray, the Consul General of India in Houston.

Following the recovery of the body, Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey has tweeted "Will bring person(s) responsible to justice."
