Taliban militants storm into prison, 355 inmates escape

Kabul, Sept 15: Taliban militants on Monday stormed into a prison outside the Afghan city of Ghazni, freeing at least 355 inmates.

According to officials, the prison housed 436 prisoners in all -- of which at least 355 escaped in the jail-break, Tolo News reported. At least 148 of the escapees are considered to be a serious threat to national security.

Gunmen and three suicide bombers attacked the prison early on Monday morning. Meanwhile, Taliban spokesperson said that the group had carried out the attack and said that there were gunmen and three suicide bombers involved in the attack.

"Around 2:30 am six Taliban insurgents wearing military uniforms attacked Ghazni prison. First they detonated a car bomb in front of the gate, fired an RPG and then raided the prison," deputy provincial governor Mohammad Ali Ahmadi said.

Seven policemen were injured who were later taken to the hospital.
