Salute Indian people for hailing demonetisation initiative - Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the decision to demonetise Rs.500 and 1000 currency notes was taken to cleanse the system and not to cause inconvenience.

Kobe, Nov 12 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the decision to demonetise Rs.500 and 1000 currency notes was taken to cleanse the system and not to cause inconvenience.

Addressing the Indian Diaspora in Japan, the Prime Minister said the decision was not an overnight one, adding that ample planning was done before announcing the move.

"I was pondering over the difficulties, our team was thinking of ways. But obviously I couldn't share it with anyone," he said in his speech.

He expressed his gratitude towards the people for hailing the decision on demonetisation.
"I salute the people of India for hailing this initiative, despite all difficulties they have supported us," he said.

Asserting that those hoarding black money will not spared, the Prime Minister said honest people need not worry as they will get time to exchange the banned currency notes.

"Till 30 December, there will be no trouble caused to anyone. Everything that is yours, you will get it," he said.

He also said that India had maintained its postilion as one of the fastest growing economies despite two years of drought.

Earlier, the Prime Minister received a warm welcome by the people of Indian origin in Japan.

"I have had the good fortune of visiting you all even before I became the PM... In 2001, when Gujarat was hit by a strong earthquake, Kobe was the first to reach out to help," he told them.

Prime Minister Modi, who is on a three-day visit to Japan, travelled to Kobe from Tokyo in Japan's famed high-speed Shinkansen bullet train along with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.

At Kobe, Modi was received was received at Hyogo prefecture guest house by the Governor of Hyogo Toshizo Ido and Mayor of Kobe Kyuzo Hisamaoto were present at Hyogo house.

An agreement was also signed between the state of Gujarat and Hyogo Prefectural Government to promote cooperation between them in the fields of academics, business, culture, disaster management and environmental protection.
