Rare 1948 Gandhi stamps sold in London for a record of Rs 4.14 crore
A ‘unique’ strip of four ten-rupee stamps of 1948 picturing Mahatma Gandhi has been sold for a record $598,000 by British dealer Stanley Gibbons.
A set of rare stamps featuring Mahatma Gandhi has been sold to an unnamed private collector-investor for £500,000 (approximately Rs 4.14 crore) on Wednesday.
According to United Kingdom-based dealer Stanley Gibbons, the unique stamp is considered one of the most desirable collector items in Indian philately.
The block of four was sold to a private collector-investor in Australia for the highest ever price for Indian stamps.
This is not the first time, Stanley Gibbons has previously sold one of these singles for £160,000 to a client in Uruguay in 2016. A block of four is in the Queen's stamp collection, which is believed to be the world's largest and most valuable.
Keith Heddle, who is the managing director of investments at Stanley Gibbons said, "The market for high-quality Indian rarities has been strong for several years and is supported by the ongoing desire of the wealthy Indian diaspora and savvy international clients to own these historic assets."
