Peru: 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes near Juliaca
Lima, Mar 01: An earthquake measuring 7.1 has struck Peru, acording to the United States Geological Survey. The USGS said it hit in the early hours of Friday around 40 miles north of the southern city of Juliaca at a depth of 150 miles.
The earthquake was very deep at 258 km.
There were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries from the earthquake, which hit at 3:50 a.m. EST.
A tsunami warning, issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said there is no threat from "destructive" waves.
Last week a quake measuring 7.5 with its epicentre in neighbouring Ecuador rattled the coast and Amazon region of northern Peru. It left nine people injured and caused damage in Ecuador, but Peru was unscathed.
