Lisbon, Nov 9 WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Tuesday that the website is not trying to influence the US elections with the release of information on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

"We had information that fit our editorial criteria which related to the Sanders and Clinton campaign (DNC Leaks) and the Clinton political campaign and Foundation (Podesta Emails)," Efe news cited a statement by Assange.

"No-one disputes the public importance of these publications. It would be unconscionable for WikiLeaks to withhold such an archive from the public during an election," he added.

Recently, WikiLeaks has published more than 30,000 of Clinton's e-mails from a private server she used when she was Secretary of State and more recently, confidential correspondence from Clinton's campaign chief John Podesta.

Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London four years ago.

He also said that to date it had received no information about the campaigns of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

The leaked documents included transcriptions of paid speeches Clinton delivered after she left the State Department, as well as thousands of e-mails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) revealing strategies to weaken Clinton's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination -- Bernie Sanders.
