New Zealand: Indian High Commissioner rejects assault claim

Wellington, June 27: Indian High Commissioner in New Zealand has rejected an accusation that that his wife had assaulted a staff member.

According to police, a cook at the Indian diplomatic mission was allegedly assaulted by Sharmila Thapar wife of Indian envoy Ravi Thapar, New Zealand Herald reported.

The cook was found by a member of the public in a distressed state in Wellington after walking from the residence in Lower Hutt to the city.

Thapar denied that the employee was treated as a slave, saying the man had a set of keys to the house and often stayed in the Lower Hutt residence alone.

The alleged victim was physically assaulted by Sharmila at the residence where he worked and lived, and threatened with assault by Ravi Thapar.

However the staffer declined to lay a formal complaint.

Ravi Thapar is set to leave New Zealand however he denied he is leaving country as a result of allegations his wife assaulted the cook.
