Melbourne shooting: Who was Abdul Numan Haider, the ISIS terror suspect?

Melbourne, Sept 25: 18-year old Abdul Numan Haider was on Tuesday evening shot dead by the Australian police after he stabbed two members of the Joint Counter Terrorism Team at the Endeavour Hills police station on the outskirts of Melbourne.

But what transformed Haider from a "trainee electrician" teenager as a 'terror suspect'? Lets know more facts about him:

  • Afghanistan-based Haider was reportedly associated with the radical Islamic group Al-Furqan, with whom he had parted ways recently. He moved to Narre Warren, Australia ten years ago.
  • After being seen with an ISIS flag at Dandenong Plaza and he had posted that image on Facebook, following which his passport was cancelled on security grounds and since then he was under surveillance.
  • A news agency reported that Haider's parents were concerned about his behaviour in recent months, and were about to seek professional counselling for him, as he had started spending more time outside from home.
  • His parents were even contemplating the idea of getting him married, so that he could settle down, but dropped their plan due to the cancellation of his passport.
  • His friend described him as a 'quiet, gentle and softly spoken' person and also said that he was interested in sports and camp quizzes.
  • His friend also revealed that Haider was a devout Muslim who used to pray at the Hallam mosque and other mosques.
  • On the night of shooting, Haider's parents tried to stop him from going outside due to the security reasons.
  • Being described as a "known terror suspect" by the Australian government, some media reports also claimed that Haider 'may not have acted alone' on the day he launched an unprovoked attack at Oz policemen.
  • Unconfirmed reports said that Haider had planned to behead the officers and then post the images on Internet.
  • Haider was said to have been inspired by the ISIS militants' announcement on launching public beheadings in Australia on Monday, and later, he got enraged by the action of Australian policemen who launched a raid to nab the terrorists.
  • An ABC report mentioned that Haider was researching about country's PM Tony Abbott's travel plans.
  • The police was investigating for him from last 3 months as it was reported that Haider was planning a trip to Iraq and Syria.
  • At least 100 Australian youths are reportedly involved with the ISIS activities.
