North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Friday, April 27, set his foot in South Korea for what is being said as one of the greatest moments of reconciliation of the 21st century. He was received by South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the venue of the historic summit at Peace House in the border town of Punmunjeom at 9.27 am local time.

The 30-something leader was "flooded with emotion" as he walked into South Korea for the first time and also as the first North Korean leader to do so in since the end of the Korean war in 1953, AFP reported.

Kim said it was "so easy" to cross the cement blocks that mark the border between the two countries that are technically at war because no peace treaty was signed to end their hostilities in the early 1950s. It was at this venue that an armistice was signed to cool the tampers on both sides, AFP added.

Kim also wondered why it took so long for a North Korean leader to visit South, the report added. The summits held in 2000 and 2007, when his late father Kim Jong-Il was at the helm, saw the South Korean presidents of those time visiting the North.

Kim also told Moon that a new era was beginning in the inter-Korean history, AFP added.

According to Guardian, Kim reportedly apologised to Moon for "interrupting" his sleep by conducting nuclear tests. The South Korean had to convene security council meetings early in the morning to prepare counter strategies against the berserk North.

Kim, who a week earlier announced that his regime is giving up nuclear tests, reiterated his promise while assuring a sound sleep for Moon from here on.

According to South Korean news, Moon said there had been "very good discussion today" and said it would be a "gift to the world".
