His summit with Trump may be over but Kim Jong-Un will stay in Vietnam for a few more days

Hanoi, Feb 28: North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who took a 60-plus hour journey to Vietnam by train to reach Hanoi for a two-day summit with US President Donald Trump, is scheduled to stay in the Southeast Asian nation till Saturday, March 2, North Korean state media KCNA (Korean Central News Agency) reported on Wednesday, February 27.

The much-publicised summit between the two leaders - their second in eight months - had a premature conclusion on Thursday and there was no joint agreement signing ceremony.

Trump, who addressed a solo press conference much earlier than scheduled after his working lunch and joint agreement signing ceremony got cancelled, said Kim had insisted on the US lifting the sanctions imposed on his country in their entirety which was not possible for the American side to agree to.

Trump though said it was not disappointing and kept faith on a long procedure to convince Kim about giving up his nuclear aspiration.

Meanwhile, Kim's stay in Vietnam will be the longest foreign trip he has made since taking over after the death of his father Kim Jong-Il in December 2011. His longest so far has been a four-day stay in China, the country which he went by train for the first time in March last year.

It is rare for leaders in North Korea, a country ruled by dictatorship, to stay out of their country for long since conspiracy plots are always in the play.

It is very rare for a North Korean leader to be absent from his country for such a long period, as some analysts say fears are lingering about a potential plot against his rule.

According to KCNA, Kim will "pay an official goodwill visit" to Vietnam on Friday and Saturday after the summit with Trump ended. His train arrived in Vietnam via China on Tuesday, February 26, and from the border town of Dong Dang, he took a luxury car to reach Hanoi.

Kim though is not the first North Korean leader to visit Vietnam. In 1964, his grandfather and the country's founder Kim Il-Sung had travelled to Hanoi via China to meet the then North Vietnam's leader Ho Chi Minh. Both North Korea and Vietnam have been theatres of serious Cold War conflicts and were divided. Yet, while Vietnam saw a reunification, the two Koreas haven't.

Kim is expected to see how the Vietnam model of economy has flourished despite being a staunch communist country once (it is still ruled by a communist party). Last year, the 35-year-old leader was seen taking a tour of Singapore - the host of the first summit with Trump - on the eve of the meeting to get a taste of the life there.
